If you get a Canada PR visa while moving to Canada, you become a permanent resident, but it’s not the same as being a Canadian citizen. As a permanent resident, you can live in Canada for 5 years. After spending 4 years as a permanent resident in Canada, you can apply for citizenship if you meet the eligibility criteria.
Canada PR Process
The Canada PR (Permanent Residency) process is a series of steps for people who want to become permanent residents of Canada. It typically involves seven straightforward stages. By following these steps, eligible applicants can apply for a Canada PR visa. The process is designed to help immigrants settle in Canada and obtain permanent resident status.
The following is a list that guides you through the Canada PR process:
- Express Entry: A way to enter Canada quickly.
- Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): A program where provinces in Canada can choose immigrants based on their needs.
- Quebec Immigration: A process for moving to Quebec, a province in Canada.
- Atlantic Immigration Program: A program for moving to the Atlantic provinces in Canada.
- Canada Start-Up Visa Program: A program for people who want to start a business in Canada.
“Did you know that you can obtain a Canada PR Visa even if you don’t have a job offer in Canada.”
Eligibility for Permanent Residency in Canada
- Score at least 67 points on the Canada Points Grid.
- Be under 40 years old.
- Achieve a certain score in IELTS or PTE language tests.
- Get your education credentials assessed.
- Show proof of having enough money.
- Having a job offer in Canada is optional.
Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residency
Here’s a list of things you need to check before applying for permanent residency in Canada.
- Your age
- Your education
- Your work experience
- How well you can speak the language
- How easily you can adapt
- If you have a job lined up (optional)
- A certificate confirming you’re clear from police checks
To apply for a Canada PR visa through the PNP program, you need a connection to the province, like working or studying there. You can also be eligible with a job offer from an employer in the province. To qualify, aim for 67 points out of 100 based on the factors below:
- Age: If you’re 18-35, you get the most points. Those over 35 get fewer, and the max age to qualify is 45.
- Education: Your education should be like finishing high school in Canada.
- Work Experience: You need at least one year of full-time work for minimum points. More years mean more points, based on the job categories.
- Language Ability: Score at least 6 bands in your IELTS test, and it should be less than 2 years old. Extra points if you’re good in French.
- Adaptability: If your spouse or partner is coming with you, you get 10 extra points for adaptability.
- Arranged Employment: You can get up to 10 points if you have a job offer from a Canadian employer.
Guide to Obtaining Permanent Residency in Canada
For Indians applying for a Canada PR visa, follow these simple steps:
1. Language Tests: Take the IELTS exam and, if needed, a French language test. Make sure you achieve the required scores.
2. Submit Application: Apply based on the requirements of the chosen immigration program.
3. Provide Documents: Submit all necessary documents, ensuring they are genuine. Authenticate education and work experience documents.
4. Proof of Funds: Gather documents for proof of funds to support your stay. Complete your medical checkup and police verification.
5. Document Examination: Immigration officers will examine your documents. Be ready to provide additional information if needed.
6. PR Confirmation: Once approved, you’ll receive confirmation of your PR status and a COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence) card.
7. PR Card and Travel: Apply for your PR card and plan your journey to Canada.
Assessing Educational Credentials – ECA Process
When you apply for a Canada PR visa, it’s crucial to also apply for the Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), especially if you completed your education outside Canada. This assessment confirms that your educational qualifications are equivalent to those of a Canadian secondary school or post-secondary education.
If you’re using the Express Entry program to apply for a visa, the ECA is necessary. It demonstrates that your foreign education degree or credential is valid and is on par with a Canadian degree.
People in the following groups applying for PR need to obtain an ECA:
- If you finished your education outside Canada and are applying for a PR visa through the Federal Skilled Workers Program, you’ll need an ECA.
- You also need an ECA if you want to earn points for education you got outside Canada.
- If your spouse or partner is coming with you to Canada, they also need an ECA to earn points for their education in the PR visa application.
- Usually, an ECA is required for your highest level of education. For example, if you have a master’s degree, you only need an ECA for that, not for your bachelor’s degree. However, if you have two or more credentials and you need both for your application, you’ll need an ECA for each of them.
You can obtain your ECA from one of the designated organizations listed below:
- World Education Services
- Comparative Education Service at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies
- International Credential Assessment Service of Canada
- International Qualifications Assessment Service
- International Credential Evaluation Service
- Medical Council of Canada (for doctors)
- Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (for pharmacists)
The IRCC will only accept assessments that are issued after the organizations were authorized to provide ECA reports for immigration applicants.
Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) Fees
MCC – Medical Council of Canada | Current fee | Applicable to |
Account Registration | 320 | Every candidate must pay a single, non-refundable account fee |
Document Fee (SVR) | 220 | For every Medical Credential document you submit for Source Verification Request (SVR), a fee is charged |
Translation Fee | 140 | You need to pay a fee for each page that needs to be translated, and this fee is non-refundable. |
ECA Report Fee | 124 | This is the fee for obtaining the Education Credential Assessment (ECA) Report |
Cancellation and Reimbursement Fee on (Document Evaluation) | 67 | You can request a cancellation and reimbursement of the Document Fee only if the MCC has not processed the document yet. |
Choose the organization based on your job. For example, if you’re a Pharmacist (NOC code 3131) and need a license to work, get your report from the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada.
Advantages of Being a Permanent Resident in Canada
As someone with a Canada PR visa, you get to enjoy these advantages:
- Can apply for Canadian citizenship in the future
- Can live, work, and study anywhere in Canada
- Eligible for healthcare and other social benefits enjoyed by Canadian citizens
- Protection under Canadian law
If you’re a student or worker from another country, you need to apply specifically for the Canada PR visa. Getting this visa doesn’t automatically make you a permanent resident.
Refugees from another country don’t become permanent residents automatically. The Immigration and Refugee Board must approve their refugee status first. After that, they can apply for and get permanent resident (PR) status.
What is a Canada PR Visa?
A Canada Permanent Resident Visa is like a key to becoming a permanent resident in Canada. It allows you to stay in Canada for 5 years, and during this time, you can live, study, and work freely. If you’re eligible, you can even apply for Canadian citizenship later on.
Do’s and Don’ts of Canada Permanent Resident:
Dos | Don’ts |
Canada PRs receive many of the same benefits as Canadian citizens, such as healthcare coverage. | Canada PRs are not allowed to vote or run for any political office. |
Canada PRs have the freedom to live, study, or work anywhere in Canada. | Canada PRs are not eligible to hold certain government jobs that require high-level security clearance. |
Canada PRs have the option to apply for Canadian citizenship. | |
Canada PRs are safeguarded by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Canadian law. |
People applying for the Canada PR visa through Express Entry must go through a system that uses points for selection. The Express Entry System has three main sub-categories:
- Skilled Workers Program
- Skilled Trades Program
- Canadian Work Experience Program
If you’re a skilled worker from another country, you can apply for a Canada PR visa through the Federal Skilled Workers Program. The Canadian government started this in 2015 to welcome skilled workers to come and live in the country.
Canada PR via PNP
Canada has around 80 Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), each with its own requirements. The PNP program helps provinces address their unique immigration needs by filling jobs in demand and addressing labor shortages within the province.
Many PNPs require applicants to have a connection to the province. This could mean working or studying there, or having a job offer from an employer in that province for a job visa. However, some PNPs don’t require a previous connection; you can apply directly for a Canada PR visa through the PNP program of that province.
Popular PNP Programs for Canada PR Visa:
- Saskatchewan PNP
- Manitoba PNP
- Alberta PNP
- Ontario PNP
- New Brunswick PNP
- Nova Scotia PNP
- Prince Edward Island PNP
- British Columbia PNP
